AI Weather
A weather screen over a live radar map, with saved spots for skiing, surfing, sailing or hiking.
Tools · Asks for Location permission the first time
What it does
- Gets the forecast for your current location and falls through three sources in order — NOAA, then Apple WeatherKit, then Open-Meteo — so it keeps working outside the US and without an API key.
- Shows current conditions and temperature, a 12-hour hourly strip, wind / humidity / pressure, and a 5-day forecast. Where NOAA has no 5-day coverage it says "5-day forecast unavailable for this location" rather than leaving a hole, and shows placeholder rows while the second call is still in flight.
- Type a place into the search field and it pulls the forecast for that place. Saved spots become one-tap chips across the top, each typed as Skiing, Surfing, Sailing, Hiking or plain Weather, added by dropping a pin on a map under "Edit Locations".
- The backdrop is a non-interactive MapKit map centred on you, with your saved pins and a RainViewer radar overlay refreshed on a 10-minute cadence. After two minutes on screen, NASA EPIC full-disk Earth imagery starts cross-fading in and out on a 20-second cycle.
- A separate "Visualizer" sheet gives you a map you can actually move. Pan it anywhere and click "Weather Here" to pull the forecast for that point, which pins the temperature on the map.
- Caches the last report so the screen opens with real content instead of a spinner, and shows a small line under the temperature with when it was last updated, falling back to the name of the source that supplied it. Apple Weather attribution is pinned as a footer wherever WeatherKit data may be shown.
- With no location permission at all it falls back to a six-city US overview (New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, Denver, Seattle).
How to try it
- Open AI Weather and allow location access when macOS asks.
- Type a place into the "Search weather locations..." field and press Enter.
- Open the three-line menu inside the search bar, choose "Edit Locations", search or scroll the map, click "Drop Pin", name it and save it as a Skiing or Hiking spot.
- From the same menu choose "Visualizer", move the map, and click "Weather Here".
Works with
- Apple WeatherKit, NOAA and Open-Meteo as a three-tier source ladder
- RainViewer, for the radar tile overlay
- NASA's EPIC imagery API, for the rotating background
- The iOS mChatAI app, which has its own AI Weather applet
AI Weather ships with mChatAI+. Native macOS app. Your own API keys, or fully on-device. Get mChatAI+
