Reading & research
Wikipedia
Search Wikipedia, read the article in a side pane, and keep what you want on a saved-pages shelf.
Reading & research
What it does
- Typing in the sidebar search box searches Wikipedia as you go — it waits 500ms after you stop typing and needs more than two characters — and each result shows a title, a short extract and a thumbnail
- Clicking a result loads the full article in a reading pane on the right of the window
- A bookmark toolbar button saves the current article to "Saved Pages"; a star toolbar button marks a saved page a favourite, and "Favorites" is a filtered view of the saved list
- Right-clicking a saved page offers "Delete" and "Favorite"/"Unfavorite"; right-clicking a favourite offers "Remove from Favorites" and "Delete"
- Saved pages are written to a JSON file on disk and also inserted into the app's shared memory index under a "wikipedia" namespace, so they turn up when you search across the app
- An "Open in Browser" toolbar button hands the current article to your default browser
How to try it
- Open Wikipedia and type a topic into the search box at the top of the sidebar.
- Click a result — the article loads in the pane on the right.
- Click the bookmark icon in the toolbar to save it, then the star icon to mark it a favourite.
- Switch the sidebar between "Saved Pages" and "Favorites" under the "Library" heading to see the two lists.
Works with
- PlatformMemoryService — saved pages are inserted under a "wikipedia" namespace and are searchable from elsewhere in the app
- MapGuide — both use the same WikipediaService client
